Using a Taxi When Pregnant

Just because a woman is pregnant does not mean that her activities must be limited. Many of these activities involve moving out of the home or office. Obviously, you should check with your doctor about any specific problems you may have that could prohibit travel. If you are cleared to move around in a car, there are still some precautions you need to take.

·        Check with your doctor if clearance to travel by car includes driving yourself. If it does, remember that, in general, it is advisable not to move around too much during the first and last weeks of pregnancy.

   ·        Even if you are cleared to drive yourself, remember that the traffic congestion can make it a stressful experience, even for the best of drivers. Stress is definitely not good for you.

   ·        When traveling by road in the city, taxis are the best option. You have the comfort of traveling in the back seat and none of the hassles of fighting through traffic and worrying about other drivers.

  ·        When traveling by taxi you should do the following to maximize your safety and comfort:

o   When pregnant your urine output increases so it is a good idea to go to the bathroom before starting on the trip.

o   If you tend to get cramps or get stiff after sitting still for a few minutes, try doing a few simple stretches before getting into the taxi. This will help to loosen the joints.

o   If a cushion will make you more comfortable in the taxi, there is no reason why you should not carry one with you.

o   Dress for comfort. That does not mean looking like a slob. Your health is important and being in comfortable clothes is a part of that.

o   If you have been prescribed medications, carry them with you even if you plan to return before its time for the next dose. You never know what could delay you and sitting in a taxi worrying about being late for your medicines is not good.

o   Always wear the seat belt. Traffic or bad roads could make the trip a jerky one and you need to stay firmly in the seat. Ensure that the belt is not overly tight on the bump. It should be firmly in place but never so tight as to exert pressure or be uncomfortable.

o   If you get hunger pangs suddenly, carry a snack with you. There is no reason why you can’t munch on something while in the cab. Just be sure not to make a mess.

o   When pregnant traveling by car even at normal speeds can make you uncomfortable. If this happens to you, ask the taxi driver to slow down.

Pregnancy does not mean not enjoying life and remaining as mobile as is safe and possible. Taxis are a great way to be able to go where you want, when you want. Ensure that you use a reputed taxi company with a fleet of well-maintained vehicles and professional drivers so you can be sure of traveling in comfort and safety. A company that you can rely on to report to where you are and be on time is an added blessing.
